The National Testing Agency (NTA) has introduced several changes for JEE Main 2025 to streamline the examination process and ensure transparency. Here’s everything you need to know about the updated rules and their impact.
Key Updates in JEE Main 2025
Revised Exam Pattern
The exam pattern for JEE Main 2025 has been modified. In Paper 1 and 2, five of the 10 optional questions in Section B have been removed, making all five remaining questions mandatory. As a result, the total number of questions has been reduced.
New Question Distribution:
- BE/BTech (Paper 1): 75 questions
- B.Arch (Paper 2A): 77 questions
- B.Plan (Paper 2B): 100 questions
Updated Marking Scheme
For the first time, numerical-based questions in Section B will have negative marking. Candidates will lose 1 mark for every incorrect answer, while 4 marks will be awarded for each correct response.
Reduced Syllabus
The syllabus has been trimmed, especially in Physics. Removed topics include:
- Resolution of Vectors
- Unit Vectors
- Scalars & Vectors
- Vector Addition & Subtraction
- Scalar & Vector Products
This change allows students to focus on the remaining topics more effectively.
Fewer Exam Centres
The number of exam centres has been reduced from 300 to 284.
New Tie-Breaking Policy
In case of a tie, the ranking will now follow this priority order:
- Higher Mathematics scores
- Higher Physics scores
- Higher Chemistry scores
- Ratio of correct to incorrect answers
If the tie persists after all these steps, candidates will be assigned the same rank.

Extended Duration for PwD Candidates
PwD and PwBD candidates will now have 4 hours to complete the exam instead of 3 hours.
