CBSE to Introduce Dual Levels for Science and Social Science by 2026-27

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is all set to bring a revolutionary change in the education system by introducing two levels of Science and Social Science—standard and advanced—for Classes 9 and 10. Starting from the 2026-27 academic session, this initiative follows the success of dual-level Mathematics, which was first introduced in the 2019-20 session.

Aligned with NEP 2020 Goals

This change is a part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes flexible learning options to reduce academic stress and minimize the dependency on coaching centers. The NEP encourages students to choose the level of difficulty that suits their interests and abilities, already evident in the dual-level Mathematics model.

By offering Science and Social Science at advanced levels, CBSE aims to cater to students who are passionate about these subjects and plan to specialize in them during Class 11 and beyond.

Updated Curriculum and Textbooks

CBSE’s curriculum committee has approved this proposal, but its implementation hinges on the final nod from its governing body. Meanwhile, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is gearing up to support this transition with updated textbooks under the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023.

New textbooks for Classes 9 and 10, essential for this dual-level structure, are expected to be ready by January 2026. This timeline coincides with the gradual rollout of updated textbooks for lower classes, which started with Classes 1, 2, 3, and 6.

How Will It Work?

The advanced level may include:

  • Additional learning material
  • Challenging exercises
  • Extended learning hours

Exams could feature entirely separate question papers for each level or differentiated sections within the same paper. Students will have a set period to choose their level, with provisions to switch during a specified timeframe. This flexibility ensures that students make choices based on their aptitude and future goals.

Building on Success

The dual-level Mathematics model has already shown encouraging results, with more than 15 lakh students choosing the standard level and about 7 lakh opting for the basic level in the 2023-24 Board exams. This success lays the groundwork for expanding the approach to other subjects, marking a significant step forward in personalized education.

CBSE’s move is a promising step towards a more inclusive and adaptable education system, empowering students to learn at their own pace and explore subjects deeper.
